Week One at Urban Coders Guild’s July Coding Camp: Off to a Strong Start
The July session of Urban Coders Guild’s Summer Coding Camp, held from July 8 to July 26, is officially underway, and the first week has already been a powerful start. While Monday began a little quiet, by the end of the week, the classrooms were full of energy, curiosity, and connection. Students are beginning to build relationships, take creative risks, such as experimenting with unfamiliar coding concepts or sharing original ideas with peers, and find their stride in the world of coding.
Python: Learning the Language of Possibility
In our Intro to Python class, students got hands-on right away. They set up their coding environments and began learning core programming skills, including how to display messages, use variables, and understand various data types, such as strings and lists. They also explored math operators and user input, all while learning how to troubleshoot and debug their work. With fun challenges like building tax and tip calculators, students had the opportunity to apply new skills to real-world problem-solving.
Web Development: Creating with Identity and Imagination
The web development class kicked things off by designing “About Me” pages and digital dream boards. These early projects allowed students to explore foundational HTML elements while expressing their goals, interests, and creativity. Over the next week, students will build on this work by adding animation, enhancing mobile responsiveness, and exploring the intersection of technology and media in exciting careers. They’ll also get their websites ready to share with friends, family, and future supporters.
Unity Game Development: Bringing Code to Life
Students in the Unity class focused on C# and game development fundamentals. They practiced initializing variables, working with syntax, and writing scripts to make their prototype vehicle move across the screen. Next week, they’ll continue to build their game by programming full keyboard controls. The joy of seeing their code come to life is one of the highlights of this camp experience.
Cybersecurity: Protecting the Digital World
Our Cybersecurity students began exploring how the internet works and why protecting digital information matters. They discussed what assets need protection and how to practice good cyber hygiene. Looking ahead, they’ll dig deeper into cybersecurity threats, such as malware and phishing, and learn how to stay safe through interactive lessons and games. This is just the beginning of a journey that could lead to real-world certification and future careers.
Celebrating Our Students of the Week

Khaleb Hights, Unity Game Development
Jordan Epps, Intro to Python
Clinton Taylor, Web Development
These students stood out for many reasons, including their curiosity, focus, consistency, and enthusiasm for learning. They asked thoughtful questions, showed patience and leadership, actively participated in class, and supported their peers. These qualities not only create a strong learning environment today but also reflect the kinds of habits and mindsets that will carry them far in the tech world. Whether designing secure systems, building the next hit game, or creating innovative web solutions, their initiative and dedication are the foundation of successful tech careers.
Capturing the Moment
A professional photographer captured headshots and a group photo of the students to commemorate the week. These images will be shared with families soon and can also be used on resumes, portfolios, or even LinkedIn profiles. We’re proud to support our students not only in learning how to code, but also in building their professional presence.
This camp is more than just a summer activity. It’s a space where young people are finding their voices, gaining skills, and stepping into a community that sees them as future tech professionals, creators, and leaders. We are so grateful to our students, families, and supporters who make this work possible. And we’re only getting started.
